The Mission and What It’s About - Suomi.blog#
In my younger years, I set out alone to Finland. With a wad of cash in my pocket and only to attend a festival, I spent a week exploring the western part of Finland, well, not really. It was the area around Vaasa and down to Pori.
I enjoyed it so much that I decided to come back the next year. This time, I planned to visit the capital and take a small round trip. Ultimately, it turned into four days in Helsinki and then gradually towards Rovaniemi. On the way back, Vaasa was once again the final destination. During this time, I saw a lot, and it became clear to me that in Helsinki, everything is like back home in Germany. However, outside the southern or urban areas of Finland, it’s quite different. I became acutely aware of this when I traveled by car in subsequent vacations across the country. Icy roads, spikes on the wheels, driving through the snow in the middle of nowhere. Abandoned bus stops, endless forests, brand-new houses in between, deserted places, garbage dumps, and more. It’s so different. So, it is indeed somewhat different from what is shown in all those travel brochures. If you want to see it.
Forest, Forest, and more Forest#
Finland simply has an incredible amount of forest. If you love the forest, you’re in the right place. And if you just want to take a short day trip for hiking, you can do that on the almost everywhere available forest hiking trails. Quickly, you find yourself in untouched nature. There are short paths, but also day routes, wooden cabins, trekking paths spanning several days, and the opportunity to grill at the many resting places. The ultimate balance for the constantly stressed German.
Finland, Its Inventions, and Products#
Many brilliant things come from Finland, with fascinating products and brands. Beer, coffee, and other foods. I’ve tried many and learned to appreciate some. What is actually typical Finnish? I will likely write about some of these over time.
If You Just Want to Vacation There…#
Then this blog might not be right for you. Hiking, outdoor activities, camping, and beer are recurring themes here. Also, everything you might need as accessories, reviewed. Music, it can be heavy metal, which almost everyone in Finland seems to listen to in some way (not really, but electric guitar music is very present). The direction is clear; we’ll see what comes out of it.
Cheers,
