The Glacial Potholes of Askola: An Ideal Family Day Trip from Helsinki
#

Just about an hour’s drive northeast of Helsinki you’ll find one of southern Finland’s most striking geological sites: the Hiidenkirnut of Askola. Formed during the Ice Age, these glacial potholes are well laid out today and can be explored easily as a family-friendly nature destination.

What are Hiidenkirnut?
#

Hiidenkirnut (glacial potholes) are kettle-shaped depressions in bedrock, smoothed over very long periods by meltwater and stones rotating within the current. In Askola, several of these formations are accessible, including the well-known “Jättiläisen Kuhnepytty” (“Giant’s Bathtub”), measuring around 10.3 meters deep and 4.2 meters wide. The area has been open to visitors since 1965 and is maintained by volunteers.

From the parking area, a short forest path leads to the site and is generally easy to walk. After rain, paths and steps can be slippery-sturdy footwear is recommended.

Guardian of the area

Along the way you pass the Hiidenkivi, a large glacial erratic that stands like a silent guardian of the area. At a fork you can choose the direct route to the potholes or a slightly longer, more scenic path with a brief easy scramble. The view from above is worth the extra steps.

On site: orientation and highlights

At the entrance you’ll find an overview map and a small donation box. Contributions are voluntary and help maintain the site.

Boardwalks and stairways guide you past several potholes, including:

  • No. 10 – Vuorenhaltia (Mountain Spirit)
  • No. 14 – Päärynä (Pear)
  • Jättiläisen Kuhnepytty – the largest and most impressive basin
